Barely adequate functionality as a WiFi detector, September 15, 2009

I purchased this primarily to use as a WiFi network detector although it also can be used as an WiFi interface – via USB – for computers that lack built-in Wifi. In this era, however, it’s hard to think of any portable, networkable device that DOESN’T have an 802.11x interface already, so I’d consider that a legacy function more consistent with the device’s 2006 introduction date. As far as I can tell there have been no firmware or software updates to the product since then, and though it’s discontinued by Level One there is still stock on some retailer’s shelves (I picked it up from another online seller for about half the price of this Amazon offer.)
I can’t speak to its functionality as a WiFi interface; as a WiFi network detector and identifier it does the job – barely. It certainly isn’t as good as my netbook at seeing all the available networks in my neighborhood and it does NOT have a mode that will continuously scan for networks while you’re, say, driving around in the car.
But when it does detect a network the WNC-0304USB does accurately represent whether they’re broadcasting b or g signals, which channel they’re on and whether they’re secured or not. This last reporting function is the sine qua non of WiFi detectors as far as I’m concerned – for the typical user, what good is finding WiFi networks that are locked down? The detector did misrepresent my home network as being WPA-protected when in fact we use simple WEP password encryption, but at least it recognized the network as password-protected.
Strangely, however, it failed to detect the network when my computer was actually awake and had WiFi enabled, even if held a few inches from the router’s antenna – turning off WiFi on the computer or putting it to sleep allowed the WNC-0304USB to detect the network again, so I suspect that signals from actual functioning WiFi nodes can interfere with its detection capability. That’s clearly a deal-killer for me, so it’s going back to the vendor and will be replaced with the more modern and only slightly pricier TRENDNet TEW-429UB, which gets rave reviews.
One positive design feature of the WNC-0304USB is that it DOES have a (dim) EL backlight that comes on for awhile after you first energize it, so it’s theoretically possible to use in the dark. As far as I can tell, there is no support for MacOS – the unit certainly was not recognized as a network interface simply by plugging into my Mac’s USB port, and the supplied drivers/apps only go as far as Windows XP.
